FIONA ARMER

I live on the edge of the moors above Hebden Bridge. I completed the Clipper Round the World Race in 2007-08 on the 68’ sailing yacht “Hull & Humber” and now volunteer with Ocean Youth Trust Scotland. I’ve been renting studio space, painting and exhibiting regularly since 2011.

My paintings vividly convey the energy and feeling of the moment. Subjects include racing action, moorland and mountain landscapes and seascapes from the Highlands & Islands or beyond. I love capturing light on water, especially moving water. I love playing with colour and shadows in impressionist style.

I’ve always drawn animals and painted landscapes. The colour, excitement and adventure of offshore and ocean racing inspired me to switch to oils; using a knife to apply paint directly onto stretched canvas. My year on the Clipper race gave me time to observe the sea in all its moods. Running connects me with the local moors. Mountains were my first love.

In sailing action scenes, I feel the emotions of racing crew as they compete, recover or just survive. I paint from photographs taken by me or crew mates; and from sights, sounds, feelings and smells etched into memory. My mountains are more peaceful; but the beauty and majesty of such wilderness is tempered with the underlying danger of being high in the mountains, with snow on the ground and a long walk off into the gathering dusk…

I welcome commissions; contact me directly to discuss. My website is also an online shop.

Inspired by colour, light, water, adventure, wilderness. I try to capture the feeling of a moment, in a place. Sometimes it’s more about movement. Light: on water, land or snow is a recurring theme.
