I studied Fine Art, Printmaking and Textiles before becoming a full-time painter. I am excited by wild places, and love to paint in the Hebrides or along the Pennines. The North Yorkshire coast, became a frequent haunt and more recently the rugged valleys of West Yorkshire.
My head is filled with images I have witnessed in these intriguing places, and although I now work primarily from my imagination, these images still play an important part. Working intuitively, with no final image in mind, is a gamble, but one I am prepared to take. The excitement I experience with this playful approach can be far more exciting than taking the tried and tested route. I could not be satisfied if I knew the outcome from the start. Frequently drawing a line, slowly building up a pattern of marks or brush strokes, I am trying to find a balance, a combination of reality and abstraction that will surprise and excite.
