I describe my paintings as semi-abstract landscapes. Living on a hilltop, my work is about the light and weather that surrounds me; I try to capture the effect those conditions have on the land. It is unusual for me to paint an actual place but sometimes I recognise real places once the painting is done. I work mainly in acrylics on cradled boards, panels and stretched canvas.
The location of my studio is on the top floor of Linden Mill Studios in Hebden Bridge. Out of the front window I see the idiosyncratic townscape with the high shoulders of the hills hunched beyond. At the back of the studio, even on the dullest of days, the skylight window sheds a beautiful even light onto my canvases.
Hope Gallery in Hebden Bridge is an independent gallery in the town and I’m thrilled to say I have been a gallery artist there since April 2021. Caroline, the gallery director is passionate about contemporary art and represents over fifty artists and makers. I highly recommend a visit.
