Living on the hilltops above town, the wide skies, changing light and the wind are often in/on my face. These shifting conditions frequently inspire my work.
Mostly, I paint in acrylic. At times I add printed papers or fabric for texture/interest. My paintings can be described as semi-abstract landscapes and emerge from remembered observations or photos taken if something catches me. I rarely consciously paint an actual place but sometimes I recognise real places once they are completed. I work on a range of surfaces: stretched canvas, braced boards and pre-prepared panels.
In April of this year, I was invited to become a Gallery Artist at Hope Gallery on Oldgate in Hebden Bridge. My work is currently settled facing the front door of the Gallery (as at 12 April) so it can be viewed 24/7!
Recent exhibitions: In May 2021 I had a joint exhibition of paintings and prints at Linden Mill Gallery with artist Malcolm Taylor RBA and PS (at the time of writing this is still in planning). I have had two solo shows, firstly at Linden Mill in 2018 then at Water Street Gallery in Todmorden in 2020.
The location of my studio is on the top floor of Linden Mill Studios in Hebden Bridge. Out of the front window I see the idiosyncratic townscape with the high shoulders of the hills hunched beyond. At the back of the studio, even on the dullest of days, the skylight window sheds a beautiful even light onto my canvases.
