The Artist
Born into an Artistic family I’ve been dabbling with art and sculpture my whole life.
I was brought up in a small village in rural Somerset. I then went to university in the North East where I studied Anthropology and Sociology (the study of society and humankind which has had a particular influence on my art).
I came to Hebden Bridge via London; and although I enjoyed my years there I missed the countryside and community. So I decided to start a new life in a place I admired not only for its beautiful countryside and it’s arty and alternative character but also for its people and community.
The Methods
For my sculpture I generally use clay ceramics and the Raku firing method. This involves using an out door kiln, pulling the sculptures out while read hot and placing into wood shavings; starving the clay of oxygen and allowing for unique glaze affects. The results are varied and often dramatic, which is why I love to use this risky process.
For my painting I tend to use mixed media; however am a particular fan of the decalcomania technique, a printing method which creates a random and root like effect.
What I offer
Although I work on my own art projects I am also open to commission work; smaller and larger projects from pets, to murals to community projects. I’m a huge animal lover, and enjoy the challenge of capturing the animals character.
The Content
I’m a big lover of nature, I’m fascinated and impassioned by extremes of nature, the gentle, relaxing serenity to the harsh, powerful and often destructive forces, along with the idea that we as humans are no different.
I also love exploring myth and fantasy; and the big ethical and philosophical questions in life. One particular theme I can’t seem to let go of is the idea of nature taking over. The idea that the earth despite of all its contrasts and contradictions is always seeking to move back to a place of balance and harmony. The same goes for civilisation, no matter how hard mankind tries to tame nature it is a force to be reckoned with and will never truly give away control.
Another area I’m intrigued by is dream and altered states of consciousness, considerations of reality and other dimensions.
Some future projects I hope to work on involve exploration into feminine power as well as those of physical and mental health and well-being. As someone who suffers from chronic pain and fatigue I have embarked on an experimental project; exploring how to communicate these experiences; as well as the serious impacts of mental health on well-being. I find the links between mental and physical pain particularly interesting, and hope to demonstrate my thoughts on this through my art work.
