Charlie graduated with a Fine Art BA, focusing on sculpture, from The University of Leeds in 2011. Her practice surrounded casting, mould-making and ceramics and her research and experimentation within her degree influences her more function based work today.

At the age of 30, after years of travelling and working as a CAD Technician, Charlie started a furniture making apprenticeship, which she completed in 2020.

Since then her practice has surrounded making end-grain veneers, glued to birch ply for stability, and incorporating them into furniture or as wall hangings. The ply is exposed within her furniture. The idea is not to cover the workings, but to demonstrate the different compositions of wood, working together to create the final aesthetic. The end-grain is composed using a technique called ‘book-matching’, which is akin to mirroring the image. This way patterns are created and shapes are formed. Her work is largely focused on highlighting the natural beauty within wood, without too much human interference.
