I was born in Bradford and grew up in West Yorkshire, and creativity has always been a big part of my life. I studied Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design at Leeds College of Art, graduating with a First Class BA (Hons), and have spent many years working as an artist and designer. I’ve lived both in the UK and overseas, and travel, architecture, wildlife and the natural world have all found their way into my work over the years.
Colour is probably the most important thread running through everything I create. I love bold and sometimes unexpected colour combinations, intricate detail and pattern, and I’m particularly drawn to animals, birds, flowers and the shapes found in nature. More recently, the towns and landscapes around me in Yorkshire have also become part of my work, including a growing collection of illustrations inspired by Hebden Bridge and the Calder Valley.
My designs usually begin with hand-drawn illustration before being developed digitally, where I can experiment with colour, scale, layering and composition. I love the contrast between the character of a hand-drawn line and the precision that digital design allows. Some pieces become art prints, while others develop into repeating patterns or are adapted for fabric, tableware, lampshades, stationery and other objects for the home. I’ve always liked the idea that artwork doesn’t have to stay on a wall – it can become part of the things we use and live with every day.
I founded Bean & Bemble in 2020 as a way of bringing all of these interests together. What began as my own collection of colourful art and surface pattern designs has grown into a homeware and lifestyle brand, and in 2025 I opened the Bean & Bemble shop and studio in Hebden Bridge. My own work now sits alongside a carefully chosen selection from other independent British makers, artists and designers.
Supporting British manufacturing is also very important to me. My designs are produced and printed in the UK wherever possible, working with specialist manufacturers and small businesses to create pieces that are made well and intended to last. I also love being able to use the Hebden Bridge shop to support other artists, including stocking locally created prints and photography.
I now live in Brighouse with my husband, our two children and our rescue dog, and work between my home studio and the shop in Hebden Bridge. My work continues to evolve, but the aim is always the same: to create distinctive, beautifully made pieces full of colour, character and detail – things that bring a little more joy and personality into everyday spaces.
